Recently I received a phone call from a long lost friend, Kelly. I had studied photography with her nearly two decades ago. Back in the day we had modeled for some of each others various college projects. Neither of us were camera shy, and enjoying each others company as friends and sharing several interests helped make for relaxed modeling – which in turn makes better photographs. There is a reason why professional models seem to work with the same photographers throughout their careers. The same applied during this photo shoot.
I was delighted to hear from Kelly, who was now settled in life – still pursuing photography as a career, but now as a mother of one and another on the way. She wanted some photographs of her pregnancy and said that I was who came to mind. This was an amazing compliment, because as a ex-photography student she knows many photographers. Plus it had been so long since we saw each other. There was a slight concern that it would be a little awkward (I’m sure she must have had a similar thought process) because she would ultimately be semi-naked in front of someone she hadn’t seen for ages. There was zero awkwardness, all the memories of college came flooding back and the shoot was fun.
I used Kelly’s newly purchased studio lighting and backdrops. I hadn’t used a studio set-up since my university days, so I was a little anxious about that. It soon came back to me as I hope the quality of the photographs show. All that matters is that she was happy with the result, and she said that she knew I would do something arty. Again, a lovely compliment.
I’m very happy to be back in contact with Kelly as a friend. On a professional level it’s great to have her now as a professional contact. When certain occasions occur, we can pass work to each other happy in the knowledge that the work is in good hands.
Pregnancy photography is not my bag, but this job was different and it was a lot of fun.
